Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 1977. We are actually the oldest manufacturer of law office management software on the planet. We authored four systems for IBM back in the 1980's.
What is your primary product or service?
Legalmaster, a law office management software package. Legalmaster consists of a time and billing system with fairly powerful management reporting attached. The user may optionally add a number of other "modules," viz, case management, conflict of interest searching, calendaring etc.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
We had been writing contract software since around 1974. In 1977 a law firm, Murphy, Weir and Butler, a now defunct bankruptcy firm in San Francisco, asked us to write a time and billing system for them. After we completed it, IBM approached us to allow them to sell it nationwide.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We're more of a boutique shop. We provide as much hand-holding as the client wants (for no extra charge). We offer very esoteric functions if the client wants them and them give them away to all of our other clients. As a result, there are some areas that we address better than anyone else in the business, regardless of price.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one office, right here in Oakland. We were downtown for about 25 years; now we're on College in Rockridge. We have dozens of dealers throughout the country, but have no plans to add branches. The nature of our business does not call for it.
Provide detailed directions to your location
On College Avenue near Broadway, two doors south of A-16 Restaurant. Rarely do our clients visit us unless they want to take advantage of one of our employee's hobby - in exchange for $2.75 he'll write your name (or that of a loved one) in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics for you. It's quite a handsome piece of art and a one-of-a-kind gift.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash or check
Which areas do you service?
We have clients in every state, South America, the Caribbean and Guam.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Phillip Rubin, a long time Oakland resident, is COO and principle owner.
What are your hours of operation?
9-5, M-F
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
Your shirt doesn't clash with your jacket.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
The ancient Kassite saying "Mudu muda likallim la mudu ul imar."
