How long have you been in business?
Stonemountain & Daughter fabrics is 4 generations strong. Our family business of Steinberg & Sons began in California in 1919 in Los Angeles. Bob and Suzan Steinberg opened up in Berkeley in 1981. Stonemountain & Daughter has been in business for over 36 years in Berkeley now!
What is your primary product or service?
We are one of the last great fabric stores focusing on fashion and quilting fabrics. Customers find unique notions, trims, ribbons, buttons and patterns to work into their creations. Upstairs is filled with discounted designer sample fabrics!
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
My father and I grew up in the fabric business. My dad worked for Steinberg & Sons and I had the pleasure of being a child in my dad's hippie counter culture fabric store in the 60's on Melrose Ave in Los Angeles. As I was finishing up college at UC Berkeley, my dad moved his store, Stonemountain Fabrics (Stonemountain is the translation of Steinberg) to Berkeley in 1981 where I began to fall in love with the possibilities! We are indeed blessed to still be here and to have such an incredible staff to work with and an wonderful huge community which loves us.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We are a 6000 square foot fabric store in downtown Berkeley! Over the last couple decades, many of the independent fabric stores have closed. Many of our fabrics come from the garment industry and are unique and well priced. Our staff is a team of expert sewists and love to help folks with their projects.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one magnificent location at Shattuck and Dwight. We made the decision years ago to have just one great store and focus on making it better each week!

We are at 2518 Shattuck Ave - in between Dwight Way and Blake Street. We are close to Bart, Highways 80 and 580, 13, 24.

We accept all forms of payment - cash, checks, major credit cards
Which areas do you service?
We service the East Bay and all of Northern California. Our store is a destination business and we have many customers who travel in from all over the world. We also have customers who put together bus tours to visit Stonemountain & Daughter from outer areas.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Suzan Steinberg, Owner and Daughter! Lauren and Liz are the fabulous Store Managers!

M - F: 10 - 6:30; Sat: 10 - 6; Sun: 11 - 5:30
